BREAKING: RAF Coningsby Typhoons go super-sonic to intercept Latvian cargo plane
Two RAF Coningsby fighters triggered a massive sonic boom across Kent this afternoon when they intercepted a foreign cargo aircraft which had lost contact with the authorities.
The Typhoons were scrambled from RAF Coningsby as part of the Quick Reaction Alert system to escort a Latvian-registered private plane into Stansted Airport.
The explosion-like sonic boom took place at around 4.40pm and was reported across a 50-mile radius of Kent and West Sussex and as far away as Hertfordshire and Essex.
Police officers met the aircraft on the ground at Stansted at 5.10pm.
