SIXTY four veterans returned to their former Elsham Wolds airfield to remember the 1,000 airmen whom flew in bombing raids over Germany in World War 2 and never returned.
Many of them, now in their mid eighties, recalled the impact Elsham made on their lives:
Jack Spark, President of the Elsham Wolds Association, who crash landed in Surrey after one raid remembered Elsham as 'a bleak place to be stationed at to say the least'.
He was a wireless operator and flew 29 raids from Elsham between December 1943 and July 1944 while in 103 squadon.
Canon Peter Hall said the airfield was a hive of activity. "The men here offered the best of themselves to protect everybody else's freedom and we honour that."
Lt Col Bill Sergent attended on behalf of the Royal Canadian Airforce. His dad flew with 103 Squadron on nine raids from Elsham and more from Kirmington. "Being here brings a lump to my throat to think of my dad and his lost friends," he said.
Ken Dudell of Barnetby, Chairman of the Association invited veterans to lay wreaths as well as members of the Brigg National Service RAF Association and relatives of those who died. Barnetby Silver Band under conductor David Havercroft led the music, with four young members playing the Last Post.
A flypast by a Lancaster bomber followed the Act of Remembrance.
