CAISTOR Town Council is witholding payment on a bill of almost £1,000 charged for little more than pulling out a plug.
The company that installed the system - which has never operated - a year ago has charged the council for turning it off, after councillors said they had never asked for the system to be turned on, just tested to ensure the bill for installing it cou
ld be paid.
Deputy Mayor Ian Robinson said he had made enquiries of other companies and understood it required little more than pulling out a plug.
“It does seem an extraordinary amount of money to switch off the system,” he said.
The council tax payers of Caistor paid £7,741 for the two cameras at the post office and the Town Hall which councillors were intending to monitor themselves. There are other cameras on the Multi-Use Centre and there have been grants given by the county and district councils, Lincolnshire Broadband and the Multi-Use Centre.
However no Code of Practice has been set up to control the way it can be used and, although all parties concerned with it want to hand the whole system over to West Lindsey to run and monitor from Gainsborough, officers there will not accept it as it is not up to their specifications.
There is no agreement on how much this will cost or who will pay for it.
