YOU might have been forgiven for thinking that some sort of pioneering reaction to the price of petrol had taken place locally as the highways and byways of the area were filled with an invasion of tandems, and other cycles designed to carry multiple passengers.

But in actual fact, De Aston School was playing host to 'Tandem 2008', the annual National Rally of the Tandem Club of Great Britain, which attracted more than 350 cyclists to our area.

Ian and Jo Posselthwaite, who organised this year's event were delighted with the way things went.
"The school has been absolutely brilliant, laying on up to 180 meals every day and making us all feel very welcome," they said.
"We hope we've done our bit to boost the local economy this week with anything up to 150 of us turning up at various tourist attractions around the area as well as the local chip shops."
"It takes almost a year to organise this event, and we try to cater for all ages and abilities, with a choice of two or three rides each day ranging from an easy 20 mile jaunt, to the more serious rides of up to 60 or 70 miles.
"This area is ideal for us because it is centrally located making it easy for members to get to from both ends of the country, and there is a good range of local attractions to visit, and plenty of quiet country lanes to ride on"

They last visited us in 1997 and are hoping that it won't be quite as long before they next arrive.
