Thursday, 5.30pm: TRAVELLERS who in many cases have spent a lifetime in Brigg, and for the past year have been based at Westrum Park, have two years to leave the site following a ruling by the planning inspectorate announced last week.
But that may not be the end of the matter for neighbouring residents as the site may be open for 'reconsideration'.
Travellers moved in without seeking advance planning permission a year ago and the Government Inspector was asked to rule on an appeal by the travellers against enforcement action by West Lindsey Distict Council that would have seen them required to leave.
Inspector Paul Morris dismissed the appeal and upheld the enforcement notice but directed that 'the time compliance should be not one month but two years.'
He said two years would enable alternative accomodation and site provision to be set in place, including reconsideration of the current site, and 'avoid the adverse consequences of displacement which have particular weight because of the personal circumstances of the occupants.'
He also requires North Lincolnshire and West Lindsey councils to co-operate on site provision
The ruling comes ahead of the closure of the consultation period on September 19 over proposed gypsy and travellers sites put forward by North Lincolnshire.
North Lincolnshire identified three possible sites at the bottom of Station Road for travellers. Two of these are in the paddock at the back of Hewson House council offices between Station Road and St Clare's Walk, and the third is at the far end of Station Yard.
Brigg Town Mayor Mike Campion today, Thursday, called St Clares Walk residents, travellers and councillors together to air their views constructively.
He said he was concerned about the 'disquiet among residents of St Clare's Walk' following the identification by North Lincolnshire Council of Station Road as a potential location for a residential site for Gypsies and Travellers in Brigg.
"The Town Mayor is concerned that this debate could seriously damage the community in which we live," a cpuncil statement read
Despite the Inspector's ruling and the identification of possible alternative sites to house the long standing Brigg residents, it appears that this saga is still set to run and run, with scope for Westrum Lane to remain open for consideration.
