A FIVE pound bet on the 66-1 Irish bred outsider Ostinata would have started the evening off in fine form for racegoers at Rasen's party night meeting on Saturday.
The punt would have netted a cool £330 as Kevin Tobin rode his luck with no little skill right to the line.
The racecard said the horse had a mountain to climb based on his only previous trip over hurdles when it finished 11th of 16 at Statford and climb every mountain it certainly did as the luck of the Irish held!
This was the last of the evening meetings this year and what a splending meeting it was.
There was some local success for trainers and jockeys, though only in the minor placings.
In a novice hurdle, Oliver Willims from Nettleton rode the James Given trained Parkview Love to second place. With not much form over hurdles previously the Willoughton based horse took advantage when the second placed horse fell at the last.
Government trained by Michael Chapman ran on well to claim third at 100-1 with Lee Vickers impressing in the saddle.
Williams was delighted: "He went well, he travelled well today and has improved each time I have ridden him. The winner Shore Thing won easily but luck helped us with the faller."
Williams went conditional three months ago and the former De Aston student has been delighted with progress so far. He is at Malcolm Jefferson's Malton yard and forssees a bright future.
"We have got some big owners with horses in the yard now and these are exciting times. Trevor Hemmings who owns Grand National winner Hedgehunter has some in as does J.P. Mcmanus."
Brouse En Feux (7-2) seized the advantage when Still at Lunch fell on the back straight in the second race to give trainer David Pipe and jockey Tom Scudamore a winner.
Wee William the 11-10 favourite took the handicap chase in very convincing style, barely touching the birch on his way round, while the £10,000 feature race was claimed equally impresively by the Jonjo O'Neill trained Nelson's Spice under Noel Fehily. Another Storm took the final hurdle.
* There is Arab racing this Saturday, with an entry offer on page 79, and a two-day Festival at Rasen on Saturday and Sunday, September 27 and 28.
