THE HATS may have been the centre of attention off the course, but 'Seymour Weld' was the focus on it.
After running unplaced in last month's feature race, the horse showed he can handle lesser oppostion with ease when he claimed the Jane Clugston Perpetual Novices Chase by a massive 25 lengths.

The 2/5 favourite was a double winner at the course in June before finding the July date a step too far.

Bottom weight ‘Gamma Velorum’ (4-1) showed his rivals a clean pair of heels in a large field of 16 in the opener, with some impressive speed up the straight.

It was then that favourite backers came into their own. ‘Still at Lunch’ under Richard Magrath (13-8) took the novice hurdle holding off the appropriately named ‘Russian Flag’ by three quarters of a length.

‘Seymour Weld’ followed, barely catching a twig in some fine clearances of the birch, and the third favourite to show was ‘Kirby's Vic’ (5-2) who came with a late run to take the handicap chase.

‘Waterspray’ (11-1) in second and the Peter Bowen trained ‘Genghis’ (13-2), had been well fancied by those looking for better returns and both looked well placed entering the straight before having to settle the minor places.

‘Breaking Storm’ trained by Mrs K Walton won the novices handicap hurdle and Markington made Bowen's long journey from Pembrokeshire well worthwhile by taking the bumper in impressive style.

The next meeting at Market Rasen is on Saturday week August 30
