SOUTH Kelsey Cricket Club ismaking a late bid for promotion to the Lincolnshire Premier League, with their fate resting in these final two weekends of the season.
South Kelsey skipper Lol Waghorn said, "Top of the table Cherry Willingham play Barton Town, also in the chase on Saturday week, and as long as we win against Nettleham this weekend and Cherry beat Barton then we finish second.”
South Kelsey put themselves in the promotion frame with an impressive 5 wicket win away at Cherry Willingham, the division leaders on Saturday.
As on several occasions already this season it was the club’s Sri Lankan star Chandrika Wathukarage who was man of the match as he hit a fine 85 to go with his two wickets in the Cherry Willingham innings.
Cherry made good progress up to 180 for 8 despite some tight bowling from the Kelsey attack, Waghorn claiming 3 for 50, Paul Mitchell 3 for 45 and Chandrika Wathukarage 2 for 44.
In reply South Kelsey got off to a bad start, losing S Wijayaratna for 1 but Russ Blackburn joined Wathukarage and hit a good 28 in quick time which got Cherry on the back foot. Wathukarage hit 6 sixes in his 85, the backbone of the South Kelsey innings which in the end proved match winning as he steered his side home by 5 wickets with 7 overs remaining.
